It’s been a while since I have had to share my space.
But in thinking about it, I have had to share my space most of my life.
I grew up with a big family, so bunkbeds were the thing until we moved to bigger digs. Even then, we had one bathroom for all the boys and my dad. Ugh!
In the Service, they were called racks, but ultimately, they were bunkbeds. One bathroom was par for the course. We even had inspections of the head/bathrooms.
In college, we called them lofts, which was just a fancy term for bunkbeds. Again, shared (disgusting) bathrooms. We could have used some inspections there.
Anyways, I digress.
I am back in a bunkbed and a shared bathroom. At least for the Camino.
It’s really cheap. And so am I.
And its also part of the pilgrimage experience. Allegedly.
It does take some getting used to.
First, they are now co-ed.
Second, you become remarkably more efficient with your space. You don’t need the king-sized bed even with the spouse and dog all in.
Third, you spend as little time in the bathroom as possible. I really don’t need to go into the details on this one.
Finally, you find, in general, people are polite. They are quiet when they should be. They use flashlights rather than turning on the overhead lights (unlike the Service). When you wake up, you think you are young again BECAUSE that was the last time you were in a bunkbed. Ha!
Anyway, I got a hotel room on this leg of the journey, but the hostel does have some appeal.
