Top Bunk

Ugh!

Yes, I am still staying at hostels. Thanks for asking.

“Why?” You wonder.

Well, they provide a sense of community.

There is a youthful population here that gives energy to the place.

I enjoy bad folk guitar music.

They sell $1 draft beers.

So far, checking all the boxes.

Honestly, I stay because I’m cheap. They are 10-20% of the cost of a hotel room.

They also have amenities that most hotels don’t like kitchens and laundry facilities.

On the downside, they have the drawbacks I discussed previously, like shared bathrooms and sleeping in a large room of non-related people, mostly in their underwear.

However, the most dreaded drawback of all is . . . top bunk.

It’s funny that something that I loved as a child is no longer much fun.

Negotiating a ladder in general is not high on the list of things I enjoy doing.

Negotiating one backwards at night in the dark is downright miserable.

Some of the upper bunks have barriers to avoid falling out.

Others do not.

There’s nothing like tethering yourself in for the night. Now that sounds restful.

When I make a reservation with the hostel, I always ask for the lower bunk.

Sometimes you get it, sometimes not. It’s a roll of the dice until you show up.

I never thought when I started traveling I would miss my ground floor level bed as much.
