If you have ever spent any time in Florida, you soon notice there are a llllloooootttt of old people.
It makes sense with both snowbirds and permanently retired Americans and Canadians whittling away the hours in a warm, sunny, snow-free environment. It’s the land of golf carts, early-bird dinner specials, and oxygen canisters.
It never really crossed my mind where people in Europe retire to.
Until now.
It appears to be the Canary Islands, a Spanish possession off of the coast of Morrocco, aka The Florida of Europe.
Holy Free Sun Visor Batman. I haven’t seen this many wheelchairs, motorized Rascals, wheeled walkers, canes, walking sticks, etc. in one spot since my last (hopefully) trip to Dollywood.
I don’t think the Normandy beaches on DDay had as many landing craft as Tenerife has Rascals tooling about.
From what I could tell from my feeble attempts to overhear nearby conversations at the early-bird dinner special restaurants, it is almost exclusively gobby Brits.
I can’t blame them for coming here. It’s sunny, warm, snow-free, close to England, and cheap. England is none of those.
The local business community caters to them by offering English breakfast restaurants (can’t get good blood pudding like grammy used to make), serving fish and chips & haggis-flavored crisps, and refusing to allow dentists to open offices.
I’m not sure if Brexit ultimately affects the expat trade, but it’s got me thinking about opening a New/Used Rascal dealership with attached oxygen canisters.
Cheers!
