Where does one begin with Petra?
I think the first time I saw a picture of Petra was in some coffee table book about ancient monuments or in the Raiders of the Ark movie when I was a younger.
From that moment on though I was smitten. . .
What was this wondrous building carved in red stone?
You approach Petra through a long and winding slot canyon soaring above you.
You see glimpses of it when you turn a corner or at bends in the sheer rock wall.

My first approach was at night on a candlelit path.
The way was rocky and uneven and you had to watch your step.
People on the path in front of me had stopped and were holding their phones up.

I looked up and it took a moment for my eyes to adjust . . .
and there she appeared in all her glory.

Petra seems completely out of place from the slot canyons and rockface cliffs surrounding you although they are equally stunning in their own way.
Its like you arrive at . . . Civilization.
In this remarkably beautiful natural landscape there is something even more remarkably beautiful made by man.
That has never happened to me before. I have never been Wowed by Nature and by Man at the same time.
Accomplishing something you have thought about your whole life brings an unusual feeling.
A feeling of honoring your childhood wishes that long ago hoped for adventures.
I found that there is a difference between believing in the saying “dreams come true”.
And actually making your Dreams Come True.
The difference, like Petra, is . . . Remarkable.
